What Is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, including the bone. It also includes the placement and maintenance of dental implants.

If left untreated, gum disease (periodontitis) can lead to tooth loss, infections, and systemic health issues. Periodontists are trained to perform both non-surgical and surgical procedures to treat these conditions effectively.

Common Periodontal Services We Provide

We offer a full range of periodontal and implant procedures, including:

Gum Disease Treatment (Scaling and Root Planing)

Early stages of periodontal disease can often be treated with deep cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline. We also use antibacterial rinses and may recommend localized antibiotics.

Soft Tissue Grafting

If your gums have receded due to periodontitis or aggressive brushing, a gum graft can help restore lost tissue, protect tooth roots, and improve appearance.

Bone Grafting

Bone loss around the teeth or implant site can be treated with grafting material to encourage new bone growth, often used as a precursor to implants.

Crown Lengthening

This procedure reshapes the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth structure — helpful for both aesthetic concerns and preparation for restorations.

Periodontal Surgery

Advanced gum disease may require surgical intervention to clean infected pockets and promote healing. Procedures are performed with local anesthesia and minimal discomfort.

Dental Implants

As a specialist in implant dentistry, Dr. Maziar offers full-scope implant solutions, including single-tooth replacements, full-arch implants, and complex cases involving bone grafts.

Signs You May Need to See a Periodontist

You may benefit from periodontal care if you’re experiencing:

• Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
• Gum recession or sensitivity
• Loose or shifting teeth
• Persistent bad breath
• Tooth loss
• Jaw bone deterioration visible on X-rays
• Planning to receive dental implants

Early intervention is critical. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact our office for a consultation.

What to Expect: From Consultation to Recovery

trusted dentist

1. Initial Periodontal Evaluation

We begin with a thorough assessment of your gum and bone health, measuring periodontal pockets, checking tooth stability, and taking digital X-rays. In some instances (and for straight forward cases), if your general dentist has a treatment plan in mind and takes all the appropriate x-rays and photos we can sometimes expedite the process without an in person consultation. This means your first appointment with him can be for both treatment and a consultation. Dr. Maziar is only in our office once a month, this can help to speed treatment time along.

2. Personalized Treatment Plan

Depending on your needs, we’ll recommend either non-surgical or surgical treatments. All procedures are explained in detail so you feel confident and informed.

3. Treatment

Treatments are performed in a safe, modern environment with the highest standard of infection control. Sedation options may be available for surgical procedures.

4. Post-Operative Care and Healing

After your procedure, you’ll be given personalized instructions for healing — including diet, hygiene, medications, and activity level. For surgeries like grafts or implants, we provide both pre-op and post-op instruction sheets to support smooth recovery.

Periodontal Surgery: Pre- and Post-Op Instructions

Here are a few highlights from our standard instructions:
