What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program launched by the Government of Canada to help eligible residents access essential dental care without financial barriers. The plan covers a wide range of preventive and restorative treatments, with services being offered through participating dental clinics across the country.

The CDCP aims to ensure that:

● Cost is no longer a barrier to routine dental visits
● Preventive care becomes more accessible for underserved groups
● Canadians maintain better overall health through oral care

The plan is being rolled out in phases but is now open to all age groups who meet the eligibility requirements.

Are You Eligible for the CDCP?

Eligibility is based on a few key criteria. You may qualify if you:
● Do not have access to private dental insurance
● Have a family net income below $90,000
● Are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
● Filed your income tax return in the previous year
Eligibility is based on a few key criteria. You may qualify if you:
● Under $70,000: 100% coverage
● $70,000–$79,999: 60% coverage
● $80,000–$89,999: 40% coverage

Note: If you're already covered under a provincial dental assistance program, you may still qualify for CDCP as a secondary payer. We're happy to help you understand how this works during your visit.

Who Is Covered Right Now?

As of July 2025, all age groups who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for CDCP coverage. The program originally began with a phased rollout but has now expanded to include children, seniors, adults with disabilities, and income-qualified Canadians of any age.

What Dental Services Are Covered Under CDCP?

The CDCP covers a range of essential and preventive services, including:

● Dental exams
● X-rays
● Cleanings (scaling, polishing, fluoride)
● Fillings
● Root canals
● Tooth extractions ● Dentures and relines
● Some referrals to specialists (e.g., endodontics, periodontics)

Not covered under CDCP:

● Cosmetic procedures like whitening or veneers
● Dental implants (in most cases)
● Orthodontic treatment (braces, aligners)

Please contact us ahead of your appointment if you're unsure whether a particular treatment is covered.

Important Things to Know About CDCP Coverage

While the CDCP is a valuable program, it does come with some important limitations and administrative requirements. Here’s what you should be aware of before your appointment:

Limited hygiene visits: CDCP only covers check-ups and cleanings once per year. If you need more frequent hygiene visits (e.g., every 3–6 months), any additional visits will not be covered and will need to be paid out of pocket. We're happy to provide estimates ahead of time.
Pre-authorization requirements: Some procedures, like crowns or more complex treatments, require pre-authorization. This means we must have your full records updated — including a complete periodontal assessment (gum measurements), current X-rays, and a full-mouth exam and treatment plan.
Crowns are not guaranteed: We are finding it particularly difficult to obtain approval for crowns under the CDCP. While we always submit all required documentation, approval decisions are made by CDCP’s own dental consultants, based on strict criteria.
Coverage may change yearly: CDCP eligibility and your coverage level are determined by your income tax return. If your income changes or your renewal date passes mid-treatment, your coverage level may change accordingly. This could affect what portion of your treatment is covered depending on the date of service.

We do our best to support patients through this process, but we want to be transparent about the limitations we’ve encountered so far.
