Meet Your Cranbrook Orthodontic Dentist: Dr. Tom Rahkola

Dr. Tom is very honored to continue his dental journey at Peak Family Dental. Dr. Tom started dentistry at the University of Southern California, before returning to his hometown of Penticton, BC. A second-generation dentist, he practiced with his father before continuing a long solo practice. Thomas has extensive knowledge in all dental aspects. He loves to work with the patient to create a personalized dental plan. A special area of interest for Dr. Tom Rahkola is orthodontics. He continues to be a study club participant with his mentor, Dr. Bernardo “Coco” Garcia for over 25 years. In the words of Dr. Garcia, orthodontics is a specialty, and should be treated as such. The orthodontic Study Club continues to evaluate new methods of orthodontics, and provides what is best for each unique, new patient (or previous orthodontic patient).

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dental specialty focused on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misalignments of the teeth and jaws. This includes:

● Crowded or crooked teeth
● Overbites and underbites
● Crossbites and open bites
● Gaps between teeth
● Jaw alignment and facial development issues

Orthodontic treatment typically involves braces or clear aligners to gently shift teeth into their ideal positions over time.

Orthodontic Services We Offer in Cranbrook

We offer a range of orthodontic options for kids, teens, and adults:

Traditional Braces

Braces use metal brackets and wires to gradually move teeth into alignment. Today’s braces are more comfortable and discreet than ever — and still the most effective solution for complex orthodontic cases.

Early Orthodontic Intervention (Ages 7–11)

Also known as interceptive orthodontics, early treatment can guide jaw growth, reduce the risk of future problems, and sometimes shorten the time needed for full braces later.

Teen Braces and Aligners

Adolescence is a common time for full orthodontic treatment. We offer traditional braces and will soon be expanding to include clear aligner options depending on individual needs.

Adult Orthodontics

It’s never too late to straighten your teeth. Adult orthodontics focuses on achieving great results while preserving comfort, aesthetics, and function.

When Should Orthodontic Treatment Start?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7.
At this stage, we can evaluate:

● Jaw development
● Tooth eruption patterns
● Bite alignment
● Space for adult teeth

Not all children need early treatment, but catching issues early can make later treatment simpler and more effective.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Orthodontic treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of the case and the method used. On average:

● Mild corrections: 6–12 months
● Moderate corrections: 12–18 months
● Comprehensive treatment: 18–24+ months

We’ll give you a personalized treatment timeline during your consultation.
